Case Study: Beach Body Bike App

Connected Fitness Experience

Company: Beach Body | Role: UX & Product Design Lead | Platform: Android | Timeline: 7 months

The Challenge

Beachbody recognized a significant growth opportunity in the connected fitness market, prompting the development of a companion app for the Beachbody Bike (later MyFitness+ Bike). As UX & Product Design Lead, I spearheaded the design of this app, representing a pivotal shift in the company's product and design strategy. The core challenge was multifaceted:

  • New Design Paradigm: We needed to move beyond Beachbody’s existing DVD-based design patterns and create a dynamic, engaging experience optimized for a 27-inch Android tablet. This meant establishing a completely new visual language and interaction model.
  • Hardware & Performance Constraints:  Designing for a tablet required careful optimization to balance rich content with limited processing power and screen real estate.
  • Driving User Engagement & Community:  The app needed to foster motivation, track progress, and build a sense of community, extending beyond simple workout delivery.
  • Establishing a New Design Approach:  This project served as a proving ground for user-centered design principles within Beachbody, requiring me to advocate for a new design philosophy and build a foundation for future connected fitness products.
  • Balancing Ambition and Reality: We faced typical business constraints, requiring careful prioritization and efficient resource allocation to demonstrate rapid ROI.
  • Ultimately, the challenge wasn't just about building an app; it was about defining Beachbody’s presence in the evolving connected fitness landscape and establishing a new standard for user experience.

My Role & Approach

As UX & Product Design Lead, I spearheaded the design of the Beachbody Bike app, responsible for defining the end-to-end user experience and establishing a new design language for Beachbody’s entry into the connected fitness space. My approach centered on user-centricity, strategic alignment, and iterative prototyping.

  • User Research & Insight Synthesis:  I collaborated closely with our dedicated UX Researcher to define research objectives and translate research findings into actionable design insights. I played a key role in synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data to inform design decisions and prioritize features.
  • Strategic Experience Design:  I defined the user journey from onboarding to post-workout tracking, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience integrated with the broader Beachbody ecosystem./li>
  • Iterative Prototyping & Validation: I led the creation of interactive prototypes, focusing on key areas such as workout selection, live class streaming, performance metrics, and community features. These prototypes were rigorously tested and iterated upon based on user feedback, incorporating insights from the UX Researcher.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: I partnered closely with hardware engineering, data science, and product management teams to ensure seamless Bluetooth integration, data synchronization, and alignment on product roadmap. My focus was on establishing a foundation for future connected fitness products and building a design system that could be leveraged across the Beachbody platform.

The Solution

The final app delivered a robust connected fitness experience: personalized workout recommendations, real-time performance metrics, and social features such as leaderboards and community challenges. The design balanced motivation with accessibility to appeal to a wide audience.

Impact

The Beach Body Bike App launched as a core companion to the hardware product, contributing to a successful market entry in connected fitness. Early adoption metrics showed strong retention, with users engaging an average of 4 times per week.

Reflection

This project underscored the importance of integrating hardware and software seamlessly. If I were to extend the work, I would explore personalization through adaptive training plans and integrate third-party fitness wearables for a broader ecosystem.
