Offline Viewing Feature

The Challenge

CBS All Access faced a challenge: how to enhance the value proposition for our premium subscribers without triggering a costly and disruptive redesign of the existing mobile application. User data indicated a desire for offline viewing capabilities, but any new feature had to be seamlessly integrated, easily understood, and accessible to all subscriber tiers. A significant goal was to boost premium subscriber retention and attract new premium sign-ups by providing a tangible benefit without alienating free or limited-access users. The existing app architecture, while functional, presented constraints on radical changes.

My Role & Approach

As Design Manager & Creative Director, on this project, I owned the end-to-end design and strategy of the Download & Go feature and guided the team to create a clean intuitive functionality with minimal disruption to the existing app utilizing:

  • Research: User interviews and analytics reviews to understand offline usage patterns and pain points.
  • Design Exploration: Created wireframes and prototypes for download controls, storage management, and playback queue management.
  • Iteration: Tested usability and storage optimization across devices, refining interactions for clarity and simplicity.
  • Collaboration: Partnered with engineering and QA teams to ensure reliable downloads, offline playback, and error handling in low-connectivity scenarios.
  • Accessibility: Ensured the feature adhered to accessibility standards for voiceover, color contrast, and intuitive navigation.

The Solution

The feature allowed users to easily download shows and movies with a single tap, monitor storage usage, and manage downloaded content in a dedicated offline library. Smart download prioritization and playback resumption ensured a smooth experience even on low-storage devices. Cross-device syncing enabled users to start watching offline on one device and continue on another.

Impact

The introduction of downloadable content yielded significant positive results, exceeding initial projections:

  • Increased Premium Subscriber Retention: Premium subscriber retention increased by 15% within the first quarter, demonstrating the feature’s value.
  • Enhanced Content Engagement: Time spent watching content increased by 12% among premium subscribers, suggesting increased engagement and satisfaction.
  • Positive User Feedback: App store reviews consistently praised the convenience and value of offline downloads.
  • Increased Premium Subscription Sign-Ups: Sign-ups for the premium tier increased by 8% directly attributable to the feature's appeal.
  • Minimal App Redesign: The feature was successfully integrated within the existing app architecture, avoiding costly and disruptive redesign efforts.

Reflection

This project underscored the importance of designing for real-world constraints like limited connectivity. Future iterations could explore adaptive compression and predictive content suggestions to further enhance user convenience. Ultimately, this experience demonstrated the power of incremental improvements in delivering user value and driving business results.

Competitive analysis of platforms like Star, Netflix, and Spotify revealed best practices for offline content delivery, informing our design approach.

Based on initial research and defined assumptions, the team mapped and refined the user journey to align with key objectives.
